Why 100% Polyaspartic is the Gold Standard for Your Floor

The Science of Durability

While many installers use a mix of materials, we utilize Floor Shield’s proprietary 100% polyaspartic system for both the base color coat and the top clear coat. Here is why the chemistry matters for your home or business.

The Science: Aromatic vs. Aliphatic

Concrete coatings used in garages and commercial spaces generally fall into three categories: Epoxy, Polyurea, and Polyaspartic. Their differences come down to their molecular "backbone."

• Aromatic Chemistry (Epoxy & standard Polyurea): These products contain benzene rings that act like sponges for UV light. When exposed to the sun, these rings break down, causing the floor to "amber" (turn yellow/brown) or "chalk."

• Aliphatic Chemistry (Polyaspartic): These products consist of carbon chains, not  benzene rings. These chains are essentially transparent to UV wavelengths, meaning they maintain clarity, strength, and gloss for years.

The "UV Resistant" Myth

Many contractors sell aromatic epoxies labeled as "UV Resistant." This is a marketing shortcut. These products contain inhibitors that slow down yellowing, but like a sponge, they eventually become "saturated" and fail. Aliphatic polyaspartic is inherently UV stable; it doesn't need additives to protect it from the sun.

Clearing the Polyurea Confusion

You may see "Polyurea" advertised as UV stable, but this is often a marketing half-truth.

1. Epoxy is always aromatic and will always yellow.

2. Polyurea is a broad family; most are aromatic (cheaper to make) and will still yellow.

3. Polyaspartic is a specialized subtype of polyurea that is always aliphatic.

Many installers save money by using a cheap aromatic base coat and only using polyaspartic for the top coat. However, because flake systems rarely cover 100% of the floor, the exposed base coat will eventually shift color, leading to an uneven, blotchy appearance.

The Floor Shield Advantage

We don’t cut corners with "blended" systems. By using 100% polyaspartic for every layer, Floor Shield ensures:

• Total UV Stability: No ambering, even in open garages or near windows.

• Consistent Color: Since the base and top coats are both aliphatic, your floor stays the exact shade you chose.

• Proven Results: Our products are backed by third-party lab testing to confirm their superior performance.

Don't settle for a floor that fades. Choose the chemistry that lasts.
